DAILY 24-HOUR CLOSURE ON PORTION OF IWALANI/KAWAILANI ST. INTERSECTION BEGINNING ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH THROUGH SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH.

A continuous 24-hour road closure will begin on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 6:00 a.m. and continue through Sunday, September 9, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., weather conditions permitting.   A portion of Iwalani St., to include both lanes, from the Iwalani/Kawailani Streets intersection heading approximately 400 feet in the direction of Puainako St. will be closed. 

This closure is a part of the Kawailani St. Improvement Project and is necessary to complete the work in a timely manner and for the safety of the workers and the traveling public.  Jas W. Glover, Ltd. will be conducting grading and paving work. 

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during this period.  Special off-duty police officers will be posted in the area to facilitate traffic movement.

DAILY 24-HOUR CLOSURE OF THE WEST KAWAILANI ST. AND IWALANI ST. INTERSECTION BEGINNING ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 17TH THROUGH SUNDAY, AUGUST 19TH

KAWAILANI ST. IMPROVEMENT PROJECT COMMUNITY MEETING ON MONDAY, JULY 16TH.

A public meeting regarding the Kawailani St. Improvement Project will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018, at the Hilo Muni Golf Course (340 Haihai St.) Multipurpose Room, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The meeting is hosted by the Office of Council Member Sue Lee Loy to present a status update and the next steps for the project.  Representatives from the Department of Public Works and Jas. W. Glover Ltd. will be present to answer questions/concerns regarding the project.

Please be advised that temporary road closures will occur on portions of Kawailani St. between Kapualani St. and Naniakea St. on Monday, July 16th to approximately Friday, July 20th.  Hawai‘i Electric Light Company will be doing night work from 9:00 p.m. to 5 a.m. to relocate the utility poles. Special off-duty police officers will be posted in the area to facilitate traffic movement.  No power outages are expected while the work is being performed.

HAKALAU STREAM BRIDGE REPAIRS WILL BEGIN ON FEB 16TH, 2018 

Repair work on the Hakalau Stream Bridge located on the road leading to Hakalau Beach Park which is currently closed, (not bridge on State Highway 19), will begin on Friday, February 16, 2018 and is expected to be completed by Tuesday, April 17, 2018, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company was awarded the contract to repair the northern abutment that has been undermined due to scouring from the Hakalau Stream.  The bridge repairs will meet Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) standards and ensure the public’s safety at this stream crossing.

The County of Hawai‘i Department of Public Works apologizes for any inconvenience this closure has caused and thanks the community for their patience and understanding.

All State and Federal approvals, certifications, and environmental permits required by the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) have been secured.  80% of the $1,644,000 project cost will be funded by Federal funds and the county will contribute the remaining 20%.

STRIPING AND TRAFFIC MARKINGS MAINTENANCE ON PALANI RD. BETWEEN KUAKINI HWY. AND QUEEN KA‘AHUMANU HWY. (1/16/18 - 1/24/18)

KONA -  The County of Hawai‘i Department of Public Works Traffic Division will be doing maintenance work on the striping and traffic markings on Palani Rd. from Kuakini Hwy. to Queen Ka‘ahumanu Hwy.  Work is scheduled between the hours of 8:30 AM and 2:00 PM from Tuesday, January 16, 2018, and is expected to be completed by Wednesday, January 24, 2018, weather conditions permitting.  No work will occur on the weekend.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and to drive with caution as heavy vehicles will be in the work zone.  Travel in both directions will be provided at all times.  Special off-duty police officers will be posted in the area to facilitate traffic movement.
